Couples may disagree about money, parenting, family, schedules, intimacy, or recovery. Underneath the subject, one person may push to be heard while the other shuts down to escape the pressure. Counseling creates room to identify that cycle and practice a different response.
The goal is not to decide who wins. It is to help both people speak honestly, listen more accurately, lower the temperature, and make repair possible.
Notice what happens before the fight escalates and learn when to pause without abandoning the conversation.
Say what is true without attacking, listen without rehearsing a defense, and check that you understood each other.
Return to hard conversations, take responsibility for your part, and make agreements that are specific enough to follow.
